How to register a domain name

What is a domain name?

A domain name is a unique text name that identifies and locates your business on the Internet. You don't own a domain name but hold the licence for a period of time, subject to terms and conditions. The domain name also describes the type of entity (for example, .com for commercial, .gov for government) and geographical area (for example, .au for Australia, .uk for United Kingdom).

Licence period

  • .au domain name is given for a fixed period of 2 years (no longer or shorter period).
  • .com domain name can be granted for a minimum period of 1 year with a maximum of 10 years.

Prices

com.au & net.au $99 (2 years)
asn.au $60 (2 years)
id.au $44 (2 years)
org.au $33 (2 years)
com, net, org, info & biz $30 (1 year)

Prices are in Australian dollars and include GST.

Marketing Cues is not a registrar nor a reseller. We offer the facility of registering your domain name using an affiliate link to a reputable accredited registrar who will take your order and provide you with the necessary support. Why this registrar? They offer good value for money and I love their cheap "Bottle Direct" option (AU$15 per year) which allows me to redirect domain names to my existing website (see URL forwarding) and even create subdomains without paying for web hosting for each domain name.

Registration procedure

You can register your domain name even although you have not chosen your web host. See domain parking.

  1. Choose your domain name. Read tips for choosing your domain name.

  2. Check for eligibility. Domain names .com, .net and .org can be registered by any Internet users across the globe. But for .au domain name, you must meet the Domain Name Eligibility and Allocation Policy Rules set by AuDA . AuDA (.au Domain Administration Ltd) is the organisation that manages and regulates the .au domain for Australia and, accredits and licenses registrars who can sell those domain names.

  3. Search for availability. Use the search box above to find out if your domain name is available.

  4. If your domain name is available, you can handle the registration on your own by following the instructions. You will be asked various contact and technical information. The registrar will keep the contact details and pass on the technical details to the registry.
